IT’S 2:45 FRIDAY MORNING, just got back from a midnight showing of The Book of Eli. This is a must-see movie, Denzel is incredible, secular liberal critics will find much to dislike, it’s probably the most pro-faith movie, next to The Blind Side, that you will see this year. Go see it. UPDATE: WHEN I POSTED THIS FRIDAY MORNING AT 3 AM, I NEGLECTED TO MENTION THE VIOLENCE. I APOLOGIZE. THIS IS CHRISTIAN ROAD WARRIOR AGAINST EVIL BAD GUYS. IF VIOLENCE BOTHERS YOU, HAVE SECOND THOUGHTS ABOUT SEEING THE MOVIE.
The stories and pictures from Haiti are devasting. One estimate says possibly half-a-million dead. The poorest country in the Western Hemisphere needs our help, and it doesn’t need it by going to the White House website. Please consider the following worthy and reputable organizations:
PRESIDENT OBAMA CONTINUES to sink in the polls, all of them, not just the ‘right-wing’ Rasmussen poll our liberal friends like to talk about in a dismissive manner. CNN has his health care approval numbers at 40%, Gallup 37%, CBS 36%, Quinnipiac 41. Gallup says 40% approval for the economy, 47% for foreign affairs, Gallup reports these are the lowest numbers they have reported during his Presidency. A Quinnipiac poll on whether John McCain would have been better for the country and should have been elected is a statistical tie.
JACK CAFFERTY OF CNN called Nancy Pelosi a ‘horrible woman’ twice yesterday. Cafferty, who usually reserves his nastiness for conservatives railed against her for two minutes about her trip to Copenhagen ( three military jets, 20 Congressmen, 5 star Marriott ) and refusing to answer questions about it’s cost. He said with the country suffering with 10% unemployment, there was no justification for this trip. Wow, Maureen Dowd, now Cafferty, they are all starting to sound like, well, like conservatives. We tried to tell you all……
HOUSE REPUBLICAN LEADER John Boehner said yesterday that House Republicans were working on a platform for nationalizing races in November, like the Contract with America did in 1994. He didn’t quite call it a contract, but I am thankful they are at least thinking about it.
THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION claimed yesterday that Porkulus ’saved or created’ two million jobs. Do they really believe that? What are they smoking? If they keep this up, whet little credibility they have will be gone.
DOUGLAS SHULMAN, Commissioner of the IRS, said yesterday that the tax code was ‘complex’ and admitted he paid a tax preparer to do his return. When asked what could be changed to make it simpler, he dodged by saying tha t was up to Congress, that they wrote the laws, he just administered them.
YESTERDAY, NORTHWEST Flight 243 from Amsterdam was delayed on the runway in Detroit after landing because of unruly passengers. Five men from Saudi Arabia were speaking in Arabic and were overheard by the four air marshals on board. The marshals spoke Arabic, did not like what the men were saying, stopped the plane away from the terminal and removed the Saudis.
THE FINANCIAL CRISIS INQUIRY Commission, set up by Congress to examine the root causes of the current financial situation, is holding it’s first hearing today with testimony from bank executives from Chase, J P Morgan and others. However no execs from Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac were called, and apparently no plans to call them either. Since Fannie and Freddie were at the center of the mess, one suspects that the Commission is intended to cover up, not expose.
MORE LATER….
THERE IS A SPECIAL election in Massachusetts next Tuesday to fill the vacant seat once held by the late Senator Kennedy. Massachusetts, you are thinking, such a blue state, the Republican stands no chance. Well, maybe this time, he does.
The GOP candidate is State Senator Scott Brown, a Lt Col in the National Guard, who is doing incredible things. Yesterday, he held a web-based fundraiser with a goal of raising $500,ooo in one day. He raised over $1 million. He had a debate last night with his opponent where he hit one out of the park, Ronald Reagan style, when asked by moderator David Gergen about his opposition to Obamacare. Gergen asked if he would vote no when holding ” Kennedy’s seat “, blocking Kennedy’s dream bill. Brown replied, ” With all due respect, this is not Kennedy’s seat, it’s not the Democrat’s seat, it is the people’s seat.” Meanwhile, his opponent, Martha Coakley, informed the audience that she was for pulling out of Afghanistan because there were no more terrorists there. You can see the video on the Drudge Report. It’s very good.
Polls are conflicting, but the Democrat Senate Campaign Committee announced today that they are spending $567,000 more on TV ads against Brown, many of which contain references tying Scott to Bush, Cheney, Sarah and Rush. They are nervous, because if Brown wins, bye bye Obamacare. BTW, the President has no plans, according to the White House, of campaigning for Coakley. I wonder why?
I know many of you are hurting financially, but if you can spare a donation, of any size, go to http://www.brownforussenate.org and help today. It could make a difference. Imagine waking up next Wednesday and reading that Scott Brown has been elected to the Senate from Massachusetts and will hold the seat once held by Teddy Kennedy.
NEWSWEEK HAS AN interview with the wife of the Jordanian suicide bomber who killed those CIA agents in Afghanistan. She has no regrets that he left her a widow with two young daughters to raise and is supportive of her husband’s decision. By the way, he was a medical doctor and she is a journalist and they met in an internet chat room. Why do some continue to believe the myth that the Islamic radicals that threaten us are the poor and dispossessed?
MAUREEN DOWD, liberal journalist, has been deeply critical of Obama ever since Flight 253. Has Obama reached a tipping point with her, and is this a sign that even the Left is tiring of him?
THE DECEMBER jobs report brings two items of bad news. Job loss was 85,000, but even more important, the labor force, those looking for work, shrank by 700,000 from November. According to James Pethokoukis, economist for Reuters, and a good friend, had the work force stayed stable, our unemployment rate would be 10.4%, and if it had stayed stable since August, the rate would be 11%. In addition, the average duration of unemployment rose to a record 29 weeks. He notes that if and as the economy improves, many of those who have dropped out of the workforce may reenter looking for work, meaning a higher unemployment rate in an improving economy.
A NEW CBS NEWS poll showed Monday that public support for Obamacare has dropped to new levels. Just 36% approve of Obama’s handling of health care, 54% disapprove.
OUR STATE LEGISLATIVE session opened yesterday with talk by the governor and Democratic leaders of raising taxes. We’ll hear more details by the governor today in her State of the State address, but I cannot believe they are really ready to raise taxes in this economy. If they do, and if the Republicans have half a brain, and know how to use this gift being handed to them, it could be a fun, entertaining and meaningful campaign season.
I UNDERSTAND through the grapevine that Snohomish County Councilman John Koster, a long time good friend, is going to announce tomorrow that he is a candidate for Congress in the Second Congressional District. John will make a great Congressman, and if anyone is looking for a campaign to help, here it is. God bless you John, go get ‘em.
FYI, I WILL BE a guest on David Boze’s show tomorrow, Monday, 4 PM, on 770 KTTH. Have no idea what David wants to talk about, but please listen.
ATTENDED A TRAINING session yesterday put on by Evergreen Freedom Foundation for political activists on how to deal with the legislature. 300 people were there, half at their first political function, and they had to turn people away. Bob Williams, Lynn Harsh, Amber Gunn and the others did a great job. Check out their site, www.effwa.org
FRIENDS, THE TURNOUT yesterday, combined with what my good friend Brad Tofthagen pulled off last week are encouraging signs. Brad is a long time friend, never really politically involved, former Renton PD officer, who decided to gather some friends and talk about how to get involved and about doing something. On three days notice, 50 people showed up ( heard a lot of offduty officers were there ) and they are angry about what is being done to their country. Few if any had ever been involved before.
