SORRY, I JUST can’t say that enough. The impact of this election will be felt for a long time and is already changing the political landscape. Let me share some thoughts.
FOR THE DEMOCRATS, they are now divided and confused. No more talking of forcing a bill through the House, more talking of starting over, more moving to the middle, more distancing from the President. Obama is 0 for 3 in campaigning for candidates in elections in the past three months, and he still doesn’t get it, but some of the Senators and Congressmen do. Expect more retirements in the next few weeks. Obamacare is DEAD. Cap and trade is DEAD. Any new massive spending programs are DEAD. Doesn’t leave much of an agenda for the President or his party in Congress.
FOR THE REPUBLICANS, many lessons to learn. There were three major issues in this race: taxes, health care and national security. One of Brown’s great lines last night in his victory speech was: “I believe that our Constitution and laws exist to protect this nation – they do not grant rights and privileges to enemies in wartime. In dealing with terrorists, our tax dollars should pay for weapons to stop them, not lawyers to defend them.” These three issues are the kind of issues that Reagan won twice on, the issues that Democrats are vulnerable on. They are core conservative issues, that point to victory. He went on to say that our ” basic convictions need only to be clearly stated to win a majority”. Reminds me of Reagan’s call for a banner of bold colors, not pale pastels. Can the Republicans learn from this? Not just the issues, but the way Brown campaigned, and the way Bob O’Donnell in Virginia did, these are the elements that can spell victory in November 2010. I so pray that the GOP understands this.
IN AN INTERVIEW today with George Stephanopoulis, the President says, and I hope you are sitting down, ” Here’s my assessment of not just the vote in Massachusetts, but the mood across the country: THE SAME THING THAT SWEPT SCOTT BROWN INTO OFFICE SWEPT ME INTO OFFICE. People are angry and they are frustrated. Not just because of what’s happened in the last year or two years, BUT WHAT’S HAPPENED OVER THE LAST EIGHT YEARS.” ( Emphasis mine ). Is he delusional? It’s Bush’s fault? That Brown voters were Obama voters? Is there any liberal reading this who would like to take a swing at defending this? He is either delusional or the greatest spinner, or spin attempter, in American political history.
SENATOR SCOTT BROWN. REPUBLICAN. FROM MASSACHUSETTS. Sorry, I can’t say it enough.
Technically, BHO is correct in his assessment.
The same desires that pushed the president into office were the same issues that Scott Brown won on.
The only problem was, on Jan 20 2009 President O did a 180 from Candidate O. Not in the eyes of those of us who recognized him for who he was, but in the eyes of all those independents (73/27) who thought they were voting for someone who would champion School Choice, Gun Rights, and Fiscal Responsibility. (All promises made by The One, along with Transparency and CSPAN coverage of Health Care Debates.)
So on a literal level he is correct.
And had he been who he portrayed himself as, we’d all be dejected at a Cokley win today, rather than a total repudiation of the way BHO has chosen to govern.
I think a BIG lesson the R’s need to learn is that the “independents” aren’t necessarily in the middle. Many people seem to think that there’s the Left, and the Right – and assume that any who are not committed are those who are somewhere in between who might yet be swayed either way.
Especially in WA, I think a lot of R’s seem to think it’s necessary to wander toward the center to try to find independent voters.
But I think there are far MORE independents that are conservative (far from the center) but who simply don’t want to associate with the big-government or progressive R’s. (I’m finding myself in that type of independent crowd more and more.)
I think Scott Brown proved that there are plenty of conservative independents, inactive Republicans and even honest, common-sense Democrats that will rally to the proper call.
Call it “Tea Party” or whatever. I envision the Tea Party as maybe being a sort of “conscience” that the GOP has needed for a long time. Or at least that’s the role I hope it plays: restore some basic, conservative principals to the GOP.
I’ve heard too many Republican leaders say something to the effect that the “Tea Partiers” need to be “harnessed” and their energy brought into the GOP. It’s precisely that arrogant view that I think may still allow the GOP to blow this 2010 (and 2012) opportunity.
My biggest fear is that Republicans will think they can just ride this pendulum back into office. There needs to be substance and principal.
I will no longer be taken for granted, and will not promise to vote (or volunteer for, or donate to their campaign, etc) for a Republican simply based on party.
But I’d enthusiastically support one that promotes common-sense, small government and getting back to the Constitution.
(Sorry Kirby, didn’t mean to blog on your blog, but I had to get that stuff off my chest!)
Excellent! Scott Brown won the election on his ability to communicate effectively and to the point. His 2 statements regarding “senate seat is the seat of the people” and “monies should be spent on defense of terrorists” really hit the mark and hard! I’ve been here in Boston for the last 2 days – Boston! And they’re stunned. Boston with the most liberal turnout on Tuesday, and on Wednesday evening the locals were just starting to admit defeat. But the closet Scott Brown voters are expressing relief and are finding their voice. Fabulous to watch.
I have been encouraging many to read Kirby Talks. Miss your voice (you too, John!)
I woke up yesterday thinking “Of the people, by the people, for the people – so help me God” Brown will mean that when he takes that oath.
All I can say is ‘YEA’ for Scott Brown. And maybe this state can get the 2 senators who vote tax hikes and probably raises for themselves out when it is time to vote again, which is what?——this coming fall.
Republicans need to realize campaign promises are to be kept and conservative principles will win over liberal (socialist ideas) hollow chants. I hope Senator Brown is a poster child for these principles.
BHO can still appoint tsars, they must be kept under a microscope!
Kirby,
I’m with you in praying the Republicans will find their spines and take the lead from Senator Brown of Massechusetts in that standing on and fighting for core conservative principles will win the day. If that should happen I will once again be a proud Republican.
Jay
“Americans love a winner and cannot stomach losers.” From Patton
Hope to see more of him in the future of politics.
Kirby — from your keyboard to God’s ear when it comes to the major issues being pushed by the Liberals are DEAD! I’m afraid I just don’t trust them to not try to push for it anyway. They haven’t been listening to the American public so far…why listen to the voters in MA?
As for the Republicans, I pray that they will finally get their heads on straight and realize that the days of having an “R” after your name are dead and gone!! After all, Dee Dee Scazafava had an “R” after her name and she was more liberal than the Democrat candidate.
Those running the Republican Party had better learn that we are not looking for the perfect “Conservative candidate” (though that would be nice)…Scott Brown was not the “perfect” Conservative candidate (he’s pro-choice among a couple of other things). What we need are candidates who believe, and will fight for, the core of Conservative ideals…defense of this country, defense of the Free Market, lower taxes, strong on the War on Terror, ideas for taking back our education system so that the future of this country will learn that 2+2=4 whether you feel good about it, and more.
As it was with Scott Brown, the people of this nation need to rally behind these kinds of candidates and support them personally…not through the Party (which didn’t seem to be very vocal for him until he gained so much momentum in the last 2 weeks of the campaign). Look up the candidates running in your local races and support those who show that they believe in the Conservative ideals.
We have a very good chance of changing the course this country is currently on to something much more positive in November…but only with the right candidates and support for those candidates. Now is the time to stop watching and start participating.
BO may be delusional; he is also a dissembler. His underlying principle is
“whatever it takes”. He is a relativist, a typical post-modern. Change your mind, change your positions, change anything. Reality is whatever you believe it is and whatever you say it is, today. Tomorrow it will be different.
If you will go back four years when all those Demo’s ran as conservatives and promised change, and we ended up with Pelosey and her bunch, well they lied just like BO did, so maybe people will wake up….
My prayer now is that the Republicans DO learn from this. Based on past history, I have my doubts. But I keep hoping and praying.
Kirby, If a Republican, any Republican, even a Republican with half a brain runs with this obvious momentum that has been built, the momentum glaringly evident in the Reagan Republican elected in Massachusetts, Scott Brown; We The People could then make BHO a lame duck President prior to his first State of the Union speech! We are on the way if the Republicans can simply organize with a single message. Will any one, someone ever step up to the plate, and run with a platform to turn this nation around, will Sarah? We have built the stage will any one step up?
I pray that Republican canidates will emulate
Scott Brown and take 3 simple messages to
the public; National security, Cut taxes,
and Health care.. If this was good enough
for Ronald Reagan it should work for any
conservative candidate..
To John in Puyallup!
With all due respect you must have been listening to a different canidate BHO. I heard “Spread wealth around, bankrupt coal comapanies, socialize medicine, kill the econmy by exploiting enviromentalism etc.” Thats why I didn’t vote for him and like Rush L said, I said, “I hope he fails”.
Not to mention the likes of those he associated himself with!!!
Some of my hope has been restored, now we need to focus on the rest of the dead wood. Patty’s gotta go next.
Kirby, I agree with all of your points above!!
We conservative/Constitutionalists need to come up with our own platform, forget the Demoncraps, and the Republicraps—-we need to take our country back!!
Here are some suggestions for our platform:
1. Enforce freedom of Speech, Freedom of Association and Freedom of Religion—-no laws or policies can be passed against the above.
2. Enforce laws protecting private property owners—-no taking of private property to build commercial buildings by cities or counties.
3. Make the Federal Reserve and the activities of the U.S. Treasury transparant–no influence from Goldman Sacks, Citi Bank, Lehman, or any investment houses. Keep the commercial banks and the investment houses separate, and regulate Hedge Funds so they cannot drive up the price of oil or any commodities.
4. No more voting fraud: Stop government funding of ACORN. Prosecute the leaders in ACORN who stole money. Do not allow any citizen to vote two weeks before an election when they are signed up to vote. They have to vote on the same day as EVERYBODY ELSE.
5. Repeal the law Senator Lyndon Johnson got enacted in 1954 to stifle Freedom of Speech in the churches. (that was the one that said you couldn’t discuss or promote political ideas in church). It has only been enforced in conservative churches, not liberal ones. FREEDOM OF SPEECH APPLIES EVERYWHERE.
6. Criminals guaranteed swift trials and long sentences.
7. A “Woman’s right to reproductive freedom” does NOT mean killing one’s baby. A baby is a person from the time of conception–he is a separate person from his mother.
8. Strengthen Social Security to protect people who have worked, paid their bills, volunteered and been good citizens all of their lives. If a person had over $200,000 annual income, they don’t need to be receiving Social Security at age 65.
9. Support the Police Department, and make sure they have plenty of funding.
10. People in jail give up their voting rights—no exceptions!
This is a BEGINNING….Any other suggestions to the new platform?
Are we finally getting through to the “fence sitters”? There would be very few Democrats elected if the general news media would simply and truthfully state the facts.
I am telling you Kirb, FDR is rolling in his grave at what is going on with these birdbrain stinking left wing wacko’s. Gitmo was the very best answer for these terrorists, in spite of such “great powers” like the French and Germans and other idiots afraid of their own shadows Our friends and allies. BTW where are the “Frenchies” when it comes to Haiti?
With a tear in my eye I am so sad to report…
Air America ceased airing new programs Thursday afternoon and said it will soon file to be liquidated under Chapter 7 bankruptcy. It began broadcasting reruns of programs and would end those as well Monday night.
The horror………the horror!!!
Good points!
Right on! Maybe they should all just go home so they can’t mess anything else up.
