AMERICA WINS THE OSCARS, FINALLY

WATCHING THE OSCARS TONIGHT, it was satisfying to see Avatar lose best picture and director. James Cameron made Avatar as a comment on America, an anti-American statement: evil American military, happy indigenous people oppressed by evil corporate and American interests, I mean, come on, this is a guy who wears a ‘Free Mumia’ T-shirt. What do you expect?  I have heard that it’s a well-made movie, brilliant in fact, but it’s all about bashing Bush, America and capitalism.

Many expected Avatar to sweep the Oscars given it’s quality, commercial drawing power and it’s message. But surprise, The Hurt Locker beat it badly, winning best pic and best director ( oddly enough, an ex-wife of Cameron’s ). I know many veterans have concerns about some of the technical portrayals in The Hurt Locker, but it is a story in which the American military is portrayed in a realistic and positive light and Kathryn Bigelow, the producer, accepted the Best Producer award in the name of the American military, then Best Picture in the name of all in uniform who serve and protect us. And, no boos from the audience.

Then, Sandra Bullock wins Best Actress for The Blind Side, a great story of  a Christian family giving a second chance to a promising young football player from the wrong side of the tracks. She was outstanding in the role and deserved her victory.  It was a good night for the good guys in Hollywood.

If you haven’t seen one or both of these films, see them. You won’t regret it.

The only reason Hollywood applauded a pro-military movie is that “The One” is now in charge. Never would have happened if GW was still president. Still, it was only temporary. I understand “The Green Zone” goes back to typical anti-military mode.

I’m completely shocked! I have never cared about the Oscars but this is intriguing to see Hollywood get it for a change. Thanks for the insight.

I was hoping that Avatar did not sweep the oscars. I had already decided that I would not go see Avatar for its anti american hidden messages…

Having not seen the Oscars I can only go with what I heard on Sean Hannity’s show today, but the person who called in said that when Barbara Streisand handed the Oscar to Ms Bigelow and Ms Bigelow started praising the Military she, meaning Streisand had an expression of shock and disgust. That is why I never watch those shows. Miss you Kirby

Anyone wonder if their political differences caused the marriage split between Cameron and Bigelow? I mean, not to be mean, BUT, did you see Cameron’s present wife? She looks like a very nice person but given that it’s Hollywood, she looks like she could be the mother of both Kathryn and James. Looks like James Cameron lost all the way around.

Kirby, good for Hurt Locker and kudos to the Academy for giving Bullock best Actress.

  8. Ken Mortland says:

Avatar = Fern Gully on steroids. That was the phrase I coined, after reading the reviews and comments from many of my students. I, too, was surprised to see the Hurt Locker winning so many Oscars.

    Kirby,
Avatar was every thing you stated and more. Along with the ooze of the anti America, anti corporate propaganda was a strong religious message namely the worship of gaia, “mother earth”. The natives communed with this deity through rocks and trees. The earthling invaders had killed their earth goddess on their planet through their capitalist environmental abuse. Over all I found the movie offensive to the extreme.
It is amazing to me that these America haters think that a country that holds personal rights and freedom in high esteem would trample the rights of an other country or world with such reckless abandon. They need to pull their heads out of the hole they have it in and look at the real world around them, i.e. China in Africa Russia against their own people… There are rules in nature that are uncompromisable. One of these is that in a collectivist society the individual is always expendable for the sake of the collective.
    Dan
